Description
sativus - flowers are lilac purple with darker veins, cultivated since Roman times; original saffron crocus whose showy, red stigmas are used for flavoring and coloring food; early-mid fall; 3"-5"; whz 6-9; 1671;(9+cm).

Flowering at a time in the fall when there is little in bloom, these fill an important spot in the garden; many are species and can be variable in color and growth habit, depending on site; best planted in protected, well-drained, sunny location like a rock or herb garden or blooming through light mulch, chemical free lawn, or ground cover; 10 per sq. ft; whz 5-9 unless otherwise noted.
