communis ssp byzantinus - (Flags) deep purplish red flowers often with white stripes in the inner segments; many flowers on 20"-24" stems with long pointed foliage; smaller flowered and hardier than their summer blooming cousins, these also do not need staking and bloom in the late spring; these are species and are variable, depending on site; Heirloom 1700; whz 5-10 (6cm). (Note: this is not the clone found in the southwest called 'Flags').
